In marriage, wisdom is found in the willingness to communicate openly and listen attentively to one another's perspectives. In the sacred covenant of marriage, effective communication serves as the cornerstone for fostering understanding, unity, and growth. Recently, I embarked on a journey that illuminated the transformative power of transparent dialogue within the dynamics of marital relationships. Join me as I share insights gained from navigating unvoiced expectations and the profound lessons learned along the way.
Before my husband took on a second job, he and I had established a cherished tradition of alternating between reading children’s stories and Bible stories to our children at bedtime. However, as his workload increased, I willingly took on the responsibility solo. Yet, one evening, on my husband's rare night off, a moment of tension arose when I asked if he would lead the Bible time with the kids. His response was, "I don’t care," and it left me feeling disheartened and misunderstood. At that moment, I grappled with unvoiced expectations. Why couldn't he see that this was his chance to reconnect with our children? Why didn't he take the initiative to read to our children as he had done before? These unspoken questions weighed heavily on my heart, fueling a sense of disappointment and resentment. However, it was during our subsequent conversation that the true importance of communication in marriage became evident. My husband gently explained that it was unfair for me to expect him to choose something we had never discussed explicitly. He highlighted the necessity of voicing expectations openly and honestly, rather than relying on assumptions. Through this experience, we learned that true understanding can only be achieved through honest and transparent dialogue, free from the constraints of unvoiced expectations. Proverbs 24:3-4 reminds us, "By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures." "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." Ephesians 4:29 In marriage, wisdom is found in the willingness to communicate openly and listen attentively to one another's perspectives. Ephesians 4:29 further exhorts us, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." As we strive to communicate effectively in marriage, let us be mindful of our words and intentions, seeking always to uplift and edify one another. It truly has been both challenging and transformative learning how to communicate effectively in my marriage journey. Through moments of misunderstanding and frustration, I have come to appreciate the profound importance of voicing expectations openly and fostering mutual understanding with my husband. May we all strive to cultivate a spirit of honesty, empathy, and love in our communication, building strong and enduring marriages rooted in Messiah's example of selfless love.
