To Whom Much is Given, Much is Required: My Journey To Entrepreneurship Not only did I have the chance as a young girl to witness a fierce sisterhood of support, but also amazing examples of women who were self-sufficient and independently taking care of their families. Entrepreneurship has always been a part of my life as far back as my early childhood, and so has network marketing. Some of my best childhood memories include moments of home parties involving women supporting other women in business from the comforts of someone’s home. Not only did I have the chance as a young girl to witness a fierce sisterhood of support, but also amazing examples of women who were self-sufficient and independently taking care of their families.
Some of the women in the sisterhood were single parents or divorced women starting their lives over, who had to be sole providers for their families. Some were women who just needed to earn a little extra income to help their household stay afloat. My mom, one of the strongest and smartest women I have ever known, was one of those women. Her courageous ability to support our family as a single mom left an indelible life-long impression on me. So, when the opportunity to become a home-based business owner came to my dining room table, I recognized it as an opportunity and embraced it. I initially became an Independent Beauty Consultant with Mary Kay Cosmetics to earn extra income, but I learned that it was that and so much more. My very first encounter with Mary Kay Cosmetics was when I was a teenager and attended a home party with my mother. The Mary Kay consultant chose me for a makeover and used a red color palette on me. I hated it, and couldn’t hide how sad and disappointed I was. Fast forward, twenty years later when one of my ‘sister friends’ from church called me to ask if she could give me a free facial. I told her yes, only to help her out. I hadn’t ever really gotten over my very first experience with the products. I scheduled and rescheduled so many times that I thought she would eventually give up. Thank God that she was prayerfully obedient to His urging to not stop calling me. That experience of the free facial was a turning point in my business life. Today, after more than twenty years in the Mary Kay business, I can truly say that I have no regrets. My decision to become an Independent Beauty Consultant with Mary Kay Cosmetics has brought me great satisfaction. Being in business with a company whose values align perfectly with my own – God first, family second and work third, has given me the flexibility and freedom needed to earn extra income. My Mary Kay income has helped me to be self-sufficient, and even helped with the covering of the costs for purchasing my first home. Another invaluable gift I have received from my collaboration with Mary Kay is meeting andworking with some of the most incredible and amazing women who have become business role models and mentors to me. One of the results is my increase in self-confidence, which has helped me to empower other women to do the same. Another important benefit is that I get to use and share some of the beauty industry’s best products that you won’t find on the shelves of a department store, because they can only be purchased from an independent Mary Kay consultant. In my experience as an entrepreneur the most essential requirement for success is your ability to be consistent with following up. The most important piece of advice I can give other women entrepreneurs is never give up, and to follow up! If you want to build a strong client base, provide excellent customer experiences and follow up. If you want to build a team to work with you, offer the opportunity to others and follow up. Be a big dreamer but also make a plan, then follow up. If you can only focus on your business for one or two hours per day or week, be consistent and follow up on phone calls, appointments, and other required tasks. I am a true example of how patience, persistence and faithful follow-up pays off. I’m a true example of how prayer requests and faith in God can transform your life even when it doesn’t look like you’re winning. I’m a true example of how it pays to walk by faith and not by sight. When you ask God for help, you never know how He’s going to send it, but you better believe it’s already done. Mary Kay Cosmetics was just the help I needed. Be open minded. My second encounter with Mary Kay was far different than my very first experience as a teenage makeup connoisseur. Giving the products a second chance, and being open to the business as a real opportunity for financial success was a decision that changed me and my life for the better. I wish all women entrepreneurs much joy and success by consistently following up! Contact: Email: [email protected] Phone: 414-732-1191 marykay.com/TWatford5
