By Dr. Cassandra Bolar, Fatherhood Researcher and Couples Therapist This month we get the privilege of celebrating the backbone of the family, our amazing fathers. Their strength, their resilience, their protection, and their love add so much value to the lives of children and families. Oftentimes, more focus has been given to people who fail to fulfill this amazing role than attention is given to the men who show up and show out for their children, their significant others, and their community.
Well, we don’t have time for that this month because highlighting fathers who are the champions and heroes in their families is taking precedence. Fathers truly matter, and research indicates that they add unique value to children’s development. For example, academic success, socio-emotional wellbeing, mental health, and positive peer relations are all positively influenced by high levels of positive paternal engagement (Hennigar et al., 2020; Cabrera et al., 2018). I’m just here to send fathers a reminder of their significance, worth, and value to us all because… Your strength is foundational. Your love is life changing. Your words will last a lifetime. Because of you, our daughters know that they are treasured and valued. Because of you, our sons understand the meaning and significance of manhood and fatherhood. We treasure you fathers! Our families thrive because of the weight you are willing to bear on your shoulders. We love and cherish you!! Fathers, for this Father’s Day and every day, we honor and salute you!
